Mozambique is now an official tourist destination for Chinese citizens. The new status paves the way not only for large groups of Chinese tourists to visit the country, but also for closer bilateral relations in such areas as trade.

According to World Tourism Organization figures, in 2006 the tourism industry in Mozambique grew by 37 per cent over the previous year. Until now most visitors have come from South Africa, Portugal, Germany and Swaziland.

Last year China registered 34 million outbound tourists according to official statistics, making the country the largest source of tourists in Asia.
